Responsible Gambling
At Delvessianluxemanor we believe that gaming should always be an enjoyable leisure activity, freely chosen and kept firmly within personal means. This page sets out our commitment to responsible gambling, the controls available to every guest, the warning signs worth recognising, and the ways in which we and the wider community can offer support.
1. Our Commitment to Responsible Gambling
Delvessianluxemanor Ltd operates the casino floor at Delvessianluxemanor, Hokitika, as part of a premium hospitality experience. Gaming on our premises is, and must remain, a matter of personal choice. We are committed to providing a safe, fair and transparent environment in which every guest can make informed decisions about whether and how they participate.
Our team members receive regular responsible-gambling training. They are empowered — and expected — to act whenever they observe signs that a guest may no longer be playing for enjoyment. The principles set out on this page reflect our obligations under New Zealand law and our own standards of care for everyone who visits delvessianluxemanor.com or our property at 21 Weld Street, Hokitika.
2. Adult-Only Access
Participation in casino gaming at Delvessianluxemanor is restricted to persons who are 18 years of age or older. This is both a legal requirement and a non-negotiable policy of Delvessianluxemanor Ltd.
2.1 Age Verification
Our team members are authorised to request valid photographic identification from any person whose age cannot be confirmed on sight. Acceptable documents include, but are not limited to:
- A current New Zealand passport or overseas passport
- A current New Zealand driver licence
- A New Zealand Kiwi Access Card or equivalent government-issued photo identification
Any person who is unable to produce satisfactory proof of age will be refused entry to, or asked to leave, the gaming area. Our staff will exercise this right respectfully and without exception.
2.2 Protecting Young People
Guests are reminded that children and young people under the age of 18 are not permitted on the casino floor at any time. Guests who are responsible for accompanying minors to the property are asked to ensure that those minors remain in designated non-gaming areas. If you are concerned that a young person may be attempting to access the gaming floor, please notify a member of our team immediately.
3. Gaming as a Leisure Choice
Casino gaming is one of many leisure experiences available at Delvessianluxemanor. It is intended to be entertaining and optional. No guest is ever required or encouraged to participate, and the enjoyment of all other amenities at the property is in no way conditional on gaming activity.
We encourage every guest who chooses to play to do so with a clear understanding of the following principles:
- Chance governs outcomes. Every game of chance is designed so that results are random and cannot be predicted or controlled. Past results have no bearing on future outcomes.
- The house edge is real. All casino games carry a mathematical advantage for the house. Over time, the statistical expectation for any player is to spend more than they win.
- Gaming is not a financial strategy. Casino play should never be used as a means of generating income, resolving debt or recovering previous losses.
- Enjoyment is the measure. If gaming has stopped feeling enjoyable, it is the right moment to stop, take a break or seek support.
4. Setting Personal Limits
Deciding in advance how much time and money you are comfortable spending is one of the most effective ways to keep gaming within a leisure context. Delvessianluxemanor Ltd encourages every guest to set firm personal limits before they begin playing and to honour those limits regardless of the outcome of any session.
4.1 Spending Limits
We recommend that guests approach the gaming floor with a pre-determined budget — an amount they are genuinely comfortable losing — and treat that amount as the full cost of an evening's entertainment. Practical guidance includes:
- Decide your budget before you arrive and bring only that amount.
- Leave credit and debit cards in your room or elsewhere if carrying them creates temptation.
- Do not chase losses by exceeding your original budget, regardless of how close you feel to a win.
- When your budget is spent, your session is over.
4.2 Time Limits
Extended sessions can make it harder to maintain perspective about your play. We suggest:
- Decide in advance how long you intend to play.
- Use a watch, phone alarm or ask a companion to remind you when your agreed time is reached.
- Schedule regular breaks away from the gaming floor as part of your session plan.
- Avoid gaming when tired, as fatigue can impair judgement.
4.3 Voluntary Limit Assistance
Guests who would like additional assistance in managing their play may speak with a member of our Guest Services team or the casino floor management. Our team can discuss the options available to you at the property, including documented voluntary agreements around spend or access. All such conversations are handled with full discretion and respect.
5. Recognising the Warning Signs
For most guests, casino gaming is a straightforward leisure activity. For some, patterns of play can develop that go beyond simple entertainment. The following are common signs that gaming may be becoming a concern — for yourself or someone you care about.
| Area | Signs worth noticing |
|---|---|
| Spending behaviour | Regularly spending more than intended; borrowing money to fund gaming; neglecting household bills or essential costs in favour of gambling. |
| Time and focus | Spending more time gaming than planned; finding it difficult to stop or walk away; thinking about gambling frequently when not playing. |
| Emotional responses | Feeling restless or irritable when not gambling; using gambling to escape stress or difficult emotions; feeling guilt or shame after a session. |
| Chasing losses | Returning to gaming specifically to win back money already lost; increasing stakes after losses; believing a win is "due". |
| Relationships and work | Hiding gambling activity from family or friends; missing commitments due to gaming; reduced interest in other activities previously enjoyed. |
Recognising one or more of these signs is not cause for alarm in itself, but it is a prompt to pause, reflect and consider whether a conversation with someone trusted — or with our team — may be helpful. The earlier concerns are acknowledged, the easier it is to take positive steps.
6. Taking Breaks
Regular breaks are an important part of responsible gaming. Stepping away from the gaming floor gives you the opportunity to assess how your session is going, check your remaining budget and time, and decide calmly whether to continue or conclude your play.
Our property offers a range of comfortable areas in which guests can relax away from gaming activity. Our team members will never pressure a guest to return to the floor, and guests are always welcome to take as long a break as they wish. If you are unsure about returning to play after a break, listening to that uncertainty is a healthy response.
Guests may also request a short, informal break arrangement through our casino floor management — an agreement that you will not return to the floor for a set period during the same visit. This can be a useful tool if you find it difficult to step away independently.
7. Property Self-Exclusion
Delvessianluxemanor Ltd operates a voluntary self-exclusion programme. Self-exclusion allows a guest to formally request that they be refused access to the gaming area of our property for a defined period. It is a meaningful commitment and one we take seriously.
7.1 How to Self-Exclude
Any person aged 18 or over may request self-exclusion from our property's casino floor. Requests should be made in person by speaking with our casino floor management or Guest Services team at 21 Weld Street, Hokitika. Our staff will guide you through the process privately and without judgement.
7.2 Duration and Renewal
Self-exclusion agreements are available for a minimum period and can be extended. The terms of each agreement, including duration and any conditions, will be clearly explained to you at the time of enrolment. Where a guest wishes to request an extension or make the exclusion open-ended, this can be arranged through the same process.
7.3 The Effect of Self-Exclusion
Once a self-exclusion agreement is in place, Delvessianluxemanor Ltd will take reasonable steps to identify and remove the guest from the casino floor should they attend during the exclusion period. Guests who are self-excluded are asked not to enter the gaming area during the term of their agreement.
7.4 Lifting Self-Exclusion
Self-exclusion is designed to be a genuine pause, not a casual request. Requests to lift an exclusion before its agreed end date will be considered carefully and will not be actioned without a face-to-face meeting and an appropriate reflection period. Our team will discuss this process with you at the time of your initial request.
7.5 Confidentiality
All self-exclusion requests and related personal information are handled in accordance with our Privacy Policy and applicable New Zealand privacy legislation. Information shared as part of the self-exclusion process will not be disclosed to third parties except where required by law. For privacy enquiries, please contact privacy@delvessianluxemanor.com.
8. Involving Trusted Contacts
Sharing concerns about gambling — your own or someone else's — with a trusted person can be an important step. Family members, close friends and other trusted contacts can play a meaningful role in providing perspective, encouragement and accountability.
8.1 If You Are Concerned About Your Own Play
Telling someone you trust about your concerns removes the secrecy that can allow problematic patterns to continue unchallenged. A trusted contact can help you to stick to spending and time limits, accompany you during visits to the property, and support you in pursuing self-exclusion or other assistance if needed.
8.2 If You Are Concerned About Someone Else
If you believe that a family member or friend may be experiencing difficulties related to gambling, approaching the subject with care and without judgement is often most effective. Expressing concern from a place of care rather than criticism, and offering to help the person access information or support, can make a significant difference.
Concerned parties may also speak with our Guest Services or casino floor management team in confidence. While there are limits to what we can disclose about another individual's activity, we are able to discuss the responsible-gambling tools and support options available at our property, including how to initiate an exclusion request on someone's behalf where this is permitted under applicable law.
9. Wider Community Support
Delvessianluxemanor Ltd recognises that our property-level measures are one part of a broader network of support available in New Zealand. Guests who are seeking assistance beyond what we can provide at the property are encouraged to explore the resources available through their local community, including:
- Local government and community services. New Zealand has a network of community-based advisory and support services. Enquiries can be made through your local council, Citizens Advice Bureau or community notice boards in the Hokitika and West Coast region.
- General practitioners and community support workers. While we do not provide referrals to specific services, a trusted community professional may be able to connect you with appropriate local support in a confidential setting.
- Family and whānau. In many cases, the support of family and wider whānau is both the most immediate and the most meaningful resource available.
If you are unsure where to begin, our Guest Services team can assist you in identifying the kinds of local resources that may be appropriate, without disclosing your personal details to any third party without your consent.
10. Our Team and Their Role
Every member of our casino floor and Guest Services team is trained in responsible-gambling awareness. Their responsibilities include:
- Verifying the age of guests and refusing access to anyone under 18.
- Observing guest behaviour on the gaming floor for signs of distress or problematic play.
- Approaching guests sensitively when a concern is noted, and directing them to the appropriate support.
- Facilitating self-exclusion requests and break agreements promptly and without pressure.
- Ensuring that responsible-gambling information is accessible to all guests.
Our team members will never encourage a guest to continue playing beyond their expressed intention to stop, and will not use promotional incentives in a manner that may undermine responsible gambling. Any concerns about the conduct of our team in this regard should be directed to casino management or to privacy@delvessianluxemanor.com.
11. Access to Responsible Gambling Information
Information about responsible gambling is available to all guests at Delvessianluxemanor. Printed materials are available on request from our Guest Services team and are displayed in appropriate areas of the property. This page on delvessianluxemanor.com is maintained as a permanent and freely accessible resource.
Guests may request a private conversation with our casino floor management or Guest Services team at any time without giving a reason. All such conversations are treated with complete discretion.
12. Review and Updates to This Page
Delvessianluxemanor Ltd reviews its responsible gambling policies on a regular basis to ensure they remain current, effective and consistent with applicable New Zealand legislation and best practice in the hospitality and gaming sector. This page will be updated whenever material changes are made.
The current version of this page supersedes all previous versions published on delvessianluxemanor.com. Guests who have questions about any aspect of our responsible gambling approach are welcome to write to us at:
